Building a Social Networking Site?

I already bought a domain through GoDaddy. Now I need to build the Social Networking site. Is there a tutorial out there, a program, or code i can use? Don't know much about building websites, but I have an idea and want to try to make it work.I would love to use something like Ning.com or Kickadds but doesnt look like they let you use your own domain (if there is a way, i would love to hear it). I can host on a friend's server if needed. Please help.

I've actually contemplated creating a MySpace for the business but have hesitated mostly due to the very nature of MySpace. It's primarily, as you state, a social networking site that's really geared towards person-to-person socialization.

I also think that the nature of the small business will determine if a valid presence can be made or not. For example, businesses geared towards the entertainment industries may fare better than say insurance companies due to the inordinate amount of musicians, wanna be models %26amp; actors on MySpace.

There are a few avenues on MySpace that may be worth exploring:

1) Groups: Create a group centered around your small business. Recruit members, encourage discussion, publish posts, etc.

2) Events: Create an event centered around your business, be it in a physical location or out in the virtual world.

3) Classifieds: Pretty self-explanatory

Hmm, now that I took some time to devote some thought to it, I may look into MySpace again. Thanks for the inspiration imisidro!

The social network sites that seem to be more advantageous to small businesses are Squidoo, Ryze %26amp; LinkedIn. I'm a member of all three but admittedly have not had much time to devote to exploration.

I'm not familiar with any successful small business entrepreneurs using MySpace or Facebook. Sorry I can't help you there.

I would disagree with MAX. Adwords are for experienced people, who have done testing and research with ads and so on...

Social networking works but it demands that you establish good relationships(that means putting time in) and it can be very powerful!

Yea, if your willing to spend the time on it, it'll payoff.

It ain't a quick fix, you'll spend a lot of time, repeating yourself, like adding friends to multiple accounts, researching your target audience, testing, and most importantly interacting with the community at large.

Myspace has gotten very very on trying to sell stuff and as a result have made it pretty difficult.

The new thing at the moment is Facebook, I keep hearing stories about how people are making money off of strong profiles.
how about you forget MySpace and focus on the leads from Facebook.

It is for students, very clear design, has groups where you can join and promote your business, offers marketplace, link and video sharing, and thousands other features.

It is just wonderful for your purposes. I'm currently making a research on Marketing and Advertising on Facebook at a blog called biz-tips-spot with thoughts on how it can be used as advertising vehicle for leads generation.

Myspace was not designed to be a commercial website and you could get your profile deleted if you advertise and annoy someone. You would do better to go to some of the business networking sites. At least you don't run the risk of getting in trouble there or having your profile deleted.

These are just a few. However, in all honesty I have never found internet advertising to be very effective, whether it be spamming in a forum, group, being on social networks, sending out emails, safelists, etc.... Most people are out there spamming their deal -or advertising as some call it, and are very rarely interested in what you have to offer.

I think you are right - too many distractions - no matter where you go. You need seriously compelling ad copy to bring people to you or something other than the 'hey, come join or fly with me'.

I've read some articles on the web about how people get turned down for jobs (or lose their jobs) because of finding certain things on the myspace or other profiles of a candidate / employee. For example, finding out things that make the candidate or employee seem immature in some way.

So...my question is...

What if you have a myspace or some other social networking profile, and you keep it clean (image and text-wise)...will employers not be bothered by it? Or is it partly that having a profile on a social networking site is just generally looked down on?

That's not necessarily true. When I got hired at my current job, I had a myspace account. In that account I included pictures of myself drinking. Of course, I am underage. This in no way affected my employment. However, this depends on the content and context of the information provided. As long as you don't provide any information on -- 1) Who you are 2) How old you are 3) And what activities you are partaking in. -- A regular background check would not pull anything up of that sort. If you keep the profile clean (no profanity, no nude pictures, that kind of thing) you should be pretty safe.

in theory any website that does not remove or alter html tags from the entry boxes of the profile editor would support css.

you won't be able to use css layouts from ANY other website for your youth groups site, to apply css styling to elements in a page those elements need to be referred to by name...which are unique in nearly every website on the internet.

in short, myspace layouts won't work for xanga, bebo won't work on myspace, xanga layouts won't work on bebo. none of them will work on anything else - a css stylesheet has to be written from scratch *specifically* for a particular site which will normally apply styles to unique *named* objects on that site.

myspace, bebo, xanga, everything apply their own id's to sections of their site which are formatted using css - 'layout' sites consist of css which also use the id's of a specific site to format it, that code won't work on any other site.

to create custom layouts for your youth group's site you'll need to learn at the very least basic html and css then create your own css code based on the id names assigned to the objects you want to style.

the best thing to do is stop using those account . but i fyou dont want to delete them , all you have to do is change your profile like : change your picture ( use pictures like cartoons or famous people ) , dont post to much information about your self , dont say where you live ( usa and the state is enough ), use a nikname not your real name . if you cant change it delete the account and make a new one without to much info .

MatMice (http://matmice.com/) is pretty cool for the 8+ crowd. It's very similar to Myspace but a lot safer. The only thing is that you have to be "invited" to join. I would be happy to invite you, or there is a place on their site where one of the founders can send you an invitation. My problem is, during the sign up process, it asks for my email's *REAL* password. Is it safe? If it is, WHY DO THEY DO THIS?

I agree: Why would a social networking website want your email password? Honestly though, you're better off with either Myspace or Facebook for that matter or if you really need to register for that site, then make a dummy email account.
